Berta’s life began on December 7, 1934 in Luray, Kansas on the family farm. She is the daughter of Ture Adolph and Lottie Viola (Bean) Olson. She is a graduate of Luray High School and Fort Hays State College. She was active in 4-H as a leadership champion and enjoyed playing basketball. Berta also attended classes at Wichita State University. She was united in marriage to Lyle Botkin on May 19, 1956 in Thornton, CO. Berta taught school in Weskan, Kansas for two years and was a substitute teacher in the Wichita Schools for 13 years. She was an active and faithful member of the Cassoday United Methodist Church and active in the Cassoday Senior Center. Her loving family includes her children Priscilla (Richard) Smith of Kechi, David (Laurie) Botkin of Wichita, and Curtis ( Michelle) Botkin of Burns; grandchildren Samuel (Sarah ) Smith, Miranda Botkin, Eric Marshall, Lindsey ( James) Hargraves, and Beau Bonner; great grandchildren Noah and Easton Hargraves; and sisters Sharon (Jim) Cochran of Russell, and Kay (Harry) Norman of Thornton, CO. Berta passed away on August 30, 2017 at Homestead of El Dorado. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle Botkin, one brother and three sisters. Her family will gather with friends on Monday from 10-11 a.m. at Cassoday United Methodist Church where her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. led by Pastor Jim Helzer. She will be laid to rest in Cassoday Cemetery. Carlson Funeral Home is serving the family. Memorial contributions in Berta’s name may be directed to Cassoday United Methodist Church or Interim Hospice.
