Bill’s life began on June 20, 1926, the son of Clem and Audra Pearl (Meredith) Smith in El Dorado, Kansas. He attended schools in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas and graduated from Plainview High School Class of 1943. He attended Wichita Business College (WSU) for a short time and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and retiring in 1966. He married Evelyn Faye (Curnutt) Burton on December 1, 1973, in Udall, Kansas. Bill was a city councilman and the Mayor of Leon. He also was the Leon school bus supervisor and the kids loved him! Bill enjoyed fishing, fishing and more fishing! He was a life member of the Boy Scouts of America and also a Ranger. He worked at the John Zink Boy Scout Ranch in Skiatook, Oklahoma.
His loving family includes his wife, Evelyn of Augusta; sons, Ron (Carol) Lewis of Leon, Randy Lewis of Arkansas City, Brad Burton of El Dorado and Tracy Burton of Leon; daughters, Lynda Pruitt of Point, Texas, Sandi Williamson of Augusta and Debbie (Jay) Shaver of Augusta; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Bill passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 19, 2018, having reached the age of 91 years old.
His family will gather with friends on Monday, May 21, from 5-7 p.m. His funeral will be held Tuesday, May 22, at 2:00 p.m. both at Carlson Funeral Home.
