Shirley (Newacheck) Nelson, 99, longtime resident of El Dorado passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020. Shirley was born in El Dorado on October 2, 1920 to Franklin and Hazel Newacheck. She was a graduate of El Dorado High School, El Dorado Junior College and Kansas State University.
Following graduation she took a job as a dietitian for the Navy’s Officer’s Training Program in Lafayette, Louisiana. It was there that she met the love of her life, Davis (Nubs) Nelson. Following discharge from the Navy, the couple returned to El Dorado where they raised five children. Shirley enjoyed sewing, cooking and caring for her family. After her children were grown she resumed her career as a dietitian working at Wesley Medical Center and Susan B. Allen hospital in El Dorado.
Shirley was an active member of the El Dorado First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Church Circle. Shirley and Nubs enjoyed playing cards with friends, traveling and a highlight of each year was treating their children and grandchildren to a family vacation.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Davis “Nubs” Nelson; her parents and three brothers.
Survivors include five children, Rusty (Diane) Nelson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Rick (Syd) Nelson of Indian Hills, Colorado, Judy (Larry) Friesen of Wichita, Kansas, Susan (Jim) DeVore of Lawrence, Kansas and Nancy (Steve) Morgan of White city, Kansas; 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
There will be a viewing and visitation period with the family on Sunday, January 26 from 4:00-6:00 PM at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 27 at the First United Methodist Church in El Dorado, prior to the service there will be a visitation with the family from 10:00-10:45 AM. Burial will follow at the Bella Vista Mausoleum.
