Max’s life began on July 1, 1928 in Benton. He is the son of John and Lydia (Meyersick) Whitson. Max is a 1946 graduate of Whitewater High School. He was united in marriage to Mildred “Lu” Foster on June 6, 1949 in Wichita. Max was a lifelong farmer and operated the Benton Elevator and Grain Co. He was a past master of the Towanda Masonic Lodge and member of Mystic Tie Lodge #74 in Augusta, Scottish Rite and Midian Shrine of Wichita. His daughter Debra Hokkanen of Towanda, son Ted (Jane) Whitson of Benton; grandchildren Adam (Leslie) Whitson, Nathan (Elona) Whitson, Andy (Shannon) Worthington and Kyle (Ashley) Worthington; and nine great grandchildren survive Max. Max passed away on Friday October 5, 2018 at Lakepoint of Augusta. He is preceded in death by his wife Lu in 2008; brother Verle Bachelder, sister Velma Bachelder, infant son James and son in law Steve Hokkanen. His family will gather with friends on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home, El Dorado. His funeral service will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Benton Church led by Pastor Justin Lefto and Pastor John Martyn. Masonic rites will follow the service by the Mystic Tie Lodge #74. Max will be laid to rest in the Benton Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Benton Church Grief Ministry.
