Mary’s life began on February 26, 1937 in El Dorado. She is the daughter of Homer and Carrie (Cook) Milbourn. She grew up on her family farm and dearly loved animals, especially horses and dogs. She was active in 4H cooking and sewing projects as well as having some dairy cows. Mary attended Kansas State University in 1955, starting in home economics, then took business courses in the second year and worked at a bank her third year. She married Arlan Stackley on June 2, 1957 in the First Presbyterian Church in El Dorado. The young couple moved went to Amarillo, Texas where Arlan was stationed in the Air Force for Officer Supply School, then onto Okinawa, Japan for two and a half years. Mary worked for the USO and Army Quartermasters Division as an accounting clerk. Mary started studying for a nursing career at the age of 45 and was accepted into the Butler Community College School of Nursing. Mary graduated as an RN in 1987. All she wanted to be was a floor nurse, working part time, but since she had management skills, she retired as the patient care coordinator at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital in 2011. Mary was involved in a Bible study group that she truly enjoyed and hated missing meetings. She enjoyed her grandchildren and attended many of their activities. Sewing was a relaxing hobby that she thoroughly enjoyed, along with attending quilting festivals and sewing tours throughout the United States. Her greatest joy was her family that includes her husband of 61 years Arlan Stackley of El Dorado; son David (Faith) Stackley of El Dorado and grandchildren Madelyn and Cade Stackley. Mary passed away on March 12, 2019 at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover. Her parents precede her in death. Mary’s family will gather with friends on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be on Monday at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in El Dorado. Mary will be laid to rest in Chelsea Cemetery.
