Mary’s life began on May 5, 1923 in El Dorado. She is the daughter of Thomas and Mamie (Torrey) Whiteside. Mary was united in marriage to William “Vernon” Hendrix and he precedes her in death in 1990. Mary was a homemaker most of her life but did work at Wheat State Manor in Whitewater for several years and during World War II at Boeing in Wichita. She was a 25-year member of the Potwin Christian Church and had been a five-year member of the Towanda Methodist Church. Mary’s greatest joy was her family which includes her son Tom (Pam) Hendrix of Towanda; grandchildren Brandon (Jessie) Hendrix of Pratt, Brittani Milne of Shawnee, KS and Bryce (Cecelia) Hendrix of Fort Smith, AR; and great grandchildren Gracie, Landry and Kynlee. Mary passed away on Monday December 17, 2018 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Virgil Whiteside and sister Virginia Widick. Her family will gather with friends on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Towanda United Methodist Church led by Pastor Chuck McCrea and Pastor John Martyn. Mary will be laid to rest in McGill Cemetery, Potwin. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to either of the churches dear to her heart Towanda United Methodist or Potwin Christian.
