Larry Jones
September 7, 1937 ~ December 29, 2022 (age 85) 85 Years Old
Larry Howard Jones, 85, died peacefully on December 29, 2022 in Burden, KS. Larry was born September 7, 1937 to Harold and Gladys (Thorne) Jones. He attended school in Leon, KS and graduated from Leon High School in 1955. On September 11, 1955, Larry married his high-school sweetheart, Shirley Brewer in Augusta, KS. They began school together in the first grade and were classmates and friends. They established their home in Leon where they remained for their entire married lives. Larry worked for the Leon/Bluestem school district as a school bus driver for more than 55 years. He was a referee for KSHSAA officiating basketball, football, and volleyball for more than 55 years. Larry worked for the family business, The Jones Oil Co., and delivered fuel to the local farmers beginning in 1955. He went on to own and operate the business until the early 1990s. His greatest joys in life were spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Larry was also a sports enthusiast. The Jones Oil Co. sponsored a baseball team in El Dorado that Larry coached for more than a decade. He collected sports memorabilia and enjoyed watching his family participate in sports, but if you knew Larry, you knew he was a faithful fan of Kansas State University. Rarely would you find Larry without his purple Wildcat attire. Larry was a faithful member of the Leon Christian Church. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gladys Jones and his wife, Shirley Jones. Survivors are his sons, Mark (Pamela) Jones, Kirk (Theresa) Jones of Burden, KS; grandchildren Caleb Jones of Burden, Hailee (Daniel) Hamby of Rose Hill, Shalise (Justin) Calvin of Cambridge, Derik (Molly) Jones of Winfield, and Colziah (Jessica) Jones of Burden; great-grandchildren Olive, Drake, Opal, Croix, Maren, Brewer and Crew. Friends may gather with the family at the Leon Christian Church on Wednesday, January 4th from 5:00-7:00pm. Larry’s memorial service will be held at the Leon Christian Church on Thursday, January 5th at 2:00 pm. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Leon Christian Church.
