Longtime Leon, Kansas resident L. Gerald “Jerry” Schuetz died Saturday, December 14 at The Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. He was 83 years of age.
Leon Gerald Schuetz was born on October 22, 1936 in Horton, Kansas, the son of Leon C. and Ruth I. (Rickel) Schuetz. He attended High School in Horton and went on to Highland Community College and then received his Master’s Degree at Emporia State University. He played football for the Naval reserves during his college years.
On August 25, 1956, Jerry was united in marriage to his High School Sweetheart, Norma L. Atland.
He taught, coached, and became Superintendent for the Baileyville School District. He was hired as Superintendent of USD 205 in 1973 and retired in 1992.
Jerry proudly and passionately served as Mayor of Leon, Kansas multiple terms. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was very active in many community organizations throughout his lifetime.
Preceding Jerry in death were his parents, a brother Charles, and a sister-in-law Roberta Schuetz.
Surviving family members are his wife of 63 years, Norma, their chidren Geralyn Ebersohl of Leon, Teresa Dawson and her husband Kyle of Leon, and Steven Schuetz and his wife Laury of Leon. Jerry is survived by his 6 grandchildren Stacey, Matthew, Adam, Brandon, Justin, and Jessica. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and his brothers John Schuetz and Raymond Scheutz and his wife DeeAnn. Sister-in-law Kay Schuetz and Brother-in-law Maurice Atland and his wife Darlene also survive.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made in Jerry’s name to the Leon Senior Center.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday December 19, at 1:00 PM at The Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Inurnment will follow in the Leon Cemetery.
