John "Jack" W Buckner

Tribute

Jack’s life began on November 30, 1934 in El Dorado. He is the son of John W. Buckner, Sr. and Cornelia Amanda (Wright) Buckner. Jack is a graduate of El Dorado High School. He was united in marriage to Carolyn L. Piper on May 28, 1955 and she preceded him in death on December 24, 2005. Jack remarried Virgilene Sooby on September 25, 2010 and she preceded him in death on May 8, 2018. Jack worked for a short time at the El Dorado refinery but his heart was in carpentry and he operated Buckner Custom Building until his retirement. He was happiest helping people and participated in mission trips to Haiti, Russia, China, Dominican Republic and Mexico. He travelled to Israel to visit the Holy Land. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was part of the church wheelchair ramp-building ministry. Jack was a member of the First Baptist Church in El Dorado. He also participated in the Senior Olympics and has the distinction of riding his bike the length of Kansas, both east and west and north and south. His greatest joy was his family which includes his son Jay (Carla) Buckner of El Dorado, step-children Rick Sooby, Deb (Ted) Kimble, Roger Sooby, and Diane (Ron) Leiker; grandchildren J.W. Buckner, Ashley (Hollis) Barnes, Brooks (Victoria Tovar) Buckner, Joshua (Shelly) Sooby, Terra Marten, Heather (Hippy) Valerie, William Kimble, Jacob Leiker and Andrea Leiker; great grandchildren Cammi, Wes, Brooklyn, Cheyenne, Drexton, Marcos, Vanessa, Sarah, Lexi, Raina and Adie; and his siblings Bob (Connie) Buckner of Colorado and Marcine Watson of Missouri. Jack passed away on December 9, 2018 at Lake Point of El Dorado. He is preceded in death by his parents, two wives, daughter Caryne Caye and sister Cleda Rains. Jack’s family will gather with friends on Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Carlson Colonial Funeral Home where his funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. led by Pastor Wade Graber. Jack will be laid to rest in Towanda Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Caryne and Carolyn Buckner Scholarship at Butler County Community College.
