James Warren

Jimmy’s life began on January 14, 1939, the son of James E. and Elsie E. (Wright) Warren. He graduated from El Dorado High School Class of 1956. Jimmy began working at age 9, to help support his mother. He set pins at Pop Fergusons Bowling Alley, and later he did body work at Stephenson and Rice Auto Dealers. At age 17, he began working pipeline for Al Gaston. After that he ran deliveries for Meadow Gold Dairy until he entered the Navy. He married Marviss Penn on July 19, 1976, in Newkirk, Oklahoma. They were married 41 years. He served his country in the U.S. Navy retiring after 20 years of service in 1980. He served in Vietnam 4 ½ years, made Chief in 7 ½ years and Senior Chief in 12 years. He served on the USS Saratoga, Hancock, Ticonderoga and the Independence. His last four years he was in the Norfolk Nuclear Weapons Training Group which he helped set-up and taught. As a boy, he didn’t mind school subjects except geography which he figured he’d never get to see. In all, during his career he was in 48 of the 50 states. He went to most of the major countries and cities in Europe, saw 6 of the 7 continents and circled the globe 6 times. After retirement he worked for IPS Cardwell, PDG in Rose Hill, Pratt & Lambert Paint in Andover, P & T Machine Shop & Metal Finishing in Wichita.

Jimmy was a member of the Lead Hill, Arkansas Church of God and was baptized at the height of a flood on July 20, 2008. He was a Plank Owner for the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. Also a member of the Fleet Reserve Assn, Branch 280 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and of the VFW Post #1 in Denver, Colorado. Traveling and fishing he enjoyed but especially enjoyed restoring old cars and tractors with the boys. He had a little garden of fresh tomatoes. In New Mexico and Arizona he drove late model sports cars and after retirement sponsored both car and motorcycle racers.

His loving family includes his wife, Marviss of the home; sons, James II, Marcus; daughters, Elizabeth “Liz”, and Mary; step-son, Michael “Butch” O’Donnell, step-daughter, Suzie Woll; grandchildren, Brent, Levi, Lettie, Lacy, Logan, Molly, Serina, Katie, James III and Maddox; step-grandchildren, Amy, Matthew, Jason, Joseph, Cassandra, Cora and Lora; 11 great-grandchildren; special sister, Kyra Hardenbook (Blair); special granddaughters, Aspen, Logan and Talon Adlesperger and his cantankerous burro brothers, Buddy and Sonny.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Billy Joe Wright; daughters, Davina and Cricket Sherwood; step-son, Ricky Luce. Jimmy passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018, having reached the age of 79 years old.

His family will gather with friends on Wednesday, March 14, from noon-2:00 p.m. at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka, Kansas led by Pastor Stan Seymour.
