Gary Thornton, Sr.

May 25, 1943 ~ January 27, 2024 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Tribute

Gary’s life began on May 25, 1943 in Chichashea, OK; the son of Donald H. and Francis R. (Ficklin) Thornton. Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy retiring with an honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Velma L. Humphries on August 7, 1964. Gary had a passion for patriotism and worked hard to preserve the integrity of the Atomic Veterans. He was a State Captain for the Atomic Veterans Association and was instrumental in bringing the Atomic Veterans Bill to pass in 2004. Gary worked hard for his family working for Beech Aircraft as a tool and die machinist. After retiring he went on to work for the Leon Police Department as a Captain. In his spare time, Gary enjoyed metal detecting and finding long lost treasures. His family includes his children, Cynthia (Rodney) Fiedler of Newton, Gary (Michelle) Thornton, Jr. of Wichita and Christina Thornton of Leon; grandchildren Lacie, Crystal and Gage; great-grandchildren Eleanor and Maverick; siblings Sheryl (Brock) Baker, Lynette (Charles) Windsor. Gary passed away on January 27, 2024 in Wichita. He is preceded in death by his wife, Velma and sister Donnella Lais. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 2pm at Peabody United Methodist Church. Gary will be laid to rest at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.
