Gene’s life began on August 20, 1927 in El Dorado. He is the son of Raymond and Emma (Daron) McClure. Gene attended school at Vanora- Oil Hill and Leon Schools. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country from the Pacific theatre for three and half years. When Gene returned from the service, he went to work in the oil fields, first on the old cable tools and later on a rotary rig through the 1950’s and early 1960’s. He later worked in the construction trades after the oil fields until his retirement in 1989. Gene was united in marriage to Lucille M. Shannon on May 17, 1949 in El Dorado and the couple celebrated 61 years together before her death on February 20, 2010. He was a member of the AFL-CIO Local 1290 Kansas Building Trade Association, American Legion Post 81 and VFW Post 1174. Gene was an avid fisherman and camper throughout his entire life. His loving family includes his sons Ronald (Stephanie) McClure and Darryl (Teresa) McClure, both of El Dorado; grandchildren Pamela (Josh) Cyr, Scott Marshall, Jessi (Cameron) Iverson, Tera McClure, Ashley (Tylen) Hall, Sara (Marshall) Karst and Brittney McClure (Rance Pratt); ; 20 great grandchildren; sister Nadine Phelps of Wichita and brothers Gary (Janice) McClure of Wichita and Steve McClure of Leon. Gene passed away on Saturday February 23, 2019 at Lakepoint of El Dorado. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Lucille, son Raymond McClure, daughters Shirley Marshall and Krista Crespin; brothers LaVaughn and Glen McClure and sister Louise Bowlin. Gene’s family will gather with friends on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Kirby Morris Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Walnut Valley Memorial Park with military honors. Memorial contributions in Gene’s name may be directed to the Veteran’s Administration.
