Marvin L Dodson

Marvin Lee Dodson was born in El Dorado Ks at Susan B Allen memorial hospital, on February 18th, 1946. Marvin’s parents were Harold Marvin Dodson and Mary Lavina Dodson of El Dorado KS. He had two siblings, Kevin Eugene Dodson & Anne Marie Amity. Marvin graduated from El Dorado High School then attended Butler Community College. After Butler, he went forward to Emporia State University. Shortly after starting Emporia, the draft was going on; he then joined the US Navy. Marvin was in the US Navy from March 5th 1968 to February 7th 1973. During this time, he spent 4 years and 3 months of his time overseas. He had recruit training in San Diego, CA. During his time with the Navy he had several jobs that consisted of: Communications Technician, Second Class Petty Officer E5, Fleet Air Recognizance, and Electronic Warfare Operator 2. He was stationed all throughout the world.
Pensacola, FL (1968) Rhoda Spain (1970) Philippines (1971-1973). During his free time in the military, he toured all throughout Europe. Some of his favorite places were Greece, Holland, and Paris. After being discharged from the US Navy in 1973, he then met his wife Brenda. Marvin and Brenda got married in August of 1973. After getting married they then moved to Pittsburgh, Kansas so he could finish his schooling. He received his Bachelors of Science & Technology (May 17th 1975) Major was Tech. Electronics. He also received his Masters of Science on May 22nd 1976 with a major of Junior College Teaching from Pitt State. While attending Pittsburgh state he was awarded the Excellence in Research as well as being on the Dean’s Honor Roll. Marvin went on to move to Baxter Springs, Kansas to work for Gulf Oil as a Maintenance Coordinator. He worked for Gulf from 1976-1982. In 1982 Gulf plant closed down, he took a job at American Salt in Lyons Kansas. During his job at American Salt, he was Assistant Maintenance Superintendent. In 1984, Marvin & Brenda decided they wanted to move closer to home. He then took a job at Butler Community College. During his time at Butler Community College he had several different positions. He stated out as a Lead Instructor, then progressed to Evening/Summer Coordinator. Later on, he went to take a job as Director of Facilities and Maintenance. After retiring from Butler Community College, he then took a job at Circle School Districts. Marvin was the Director of Grounds Maintenance and Custodial. While teaching at Butler, they decided to have a family. Their first child, Sean Wesley Dodson was born on February 17th, 1984. A few years later, their second child, Kari Allison Dodson was born on September 3rd, 1987. On April 10th, 1990 their youngest son Alan Matthew Dodson was born.
Marvin was a very active member of the Butler Community College as well as City of Towanda. Some of the activities that he enjoyed were: Scout Master of Troop 232 of Boy Scouts of America, Committee Member of Cub Scouts, Pack 232 of Towanda KS, Circle School Board member (July 2003-October 2010) President of Circle School Board from 2007-2010, City of Towanda recreational Board, Past President of Bluestem Vintage/Classic Auto Cub, Secretary of NEA;KNEA;BCCCEA, Past treasurer of BCCC Alumni Association, he was a member of American Vocational Association, International Maintenance Institute, as well as a coach for Little League Baseball & Basketball. Marvin is survived by his Wife, Brenda Dodson. Children, Sean Dodson, Kari Dodson, and Alan Dodson. Honary, Daughter, Karen Stack. Grandchildren, Bryka Nixon, Ella Dodson, Augustine Munoz. Siblings, Kelvin & Rita Dodson of Oklahoma and Ann Amity of Colorado. Dogs, Bently & Waffles, Several Neices & Nephews. Proceeded in Death of his parents from Lavina & Harold Dodson of El Doado KS. Marvin passed away on November 30, 2017 in El Dorado. His family will gather with friends on Sunday from 1-2 p.m. at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home where his service will be held at 2 p.m. with military honors. He will be laid to rest in Towanda Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to USD 375 Circle Foundation or the Butler Community College Foundation.
