Don Bohannon

November 29, 1930 ~ December 20, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old
Don’s life began on November 29, 1930 in Cedar Vale. He is the son of Carl H. and Bertha (Duncan) Bohannon. Don is a 1948 graduate of Cedar Vale High School, attended Cowley County Junior College and graduated from Pittsburg State with his Master’s degree in Education. Don served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1952-1954. He was united in marriage to the former Sondra Eckel on August 11, 1957 in Leon. Don began his career in education as a 6th grade teacher at Leon in 1955. He moved to the Denver area to teach for a year and returned to Leon where he was an elementary school principal for over 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was an avid sports fan and especially Kansas University. He enjoyed watching his children’s and later grandchildren’s sporting events every chance he had. Don loved to travel. He was a member of the Leon United Methodist Church and the Joppa Masonic Lodge in Leon. Don was a skilled woodworker and model train enthusiast. His greatest joy was his family which includes his children Dr. Doug Bohannon, Dianne (Scott) Meyer, and Jan Bohannon, all of El Dorado; grandchildren Noah Bohannon, Erica (Nic) Roberts, Erin (Aaron) Kuhlmann, Emily (Dalton) Dreifurst, Garrett Meyer, and Destiny Smith-Bohannon; great grandchildren Ethan and Owen Roberts, Jack, Clara and Fulton Kuhlmann and his brother Reece ( Linda) Bohannon of Wichita. Don passed away at his home on December 20, 2017. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife Sondra. His family will gather with friends on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Carlson Colonial Funeral Home. Don’s funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Leon United Methodist Church led by Pastor Jim Helzer. Don will be laid to rest in Leon Cemetery. Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to the Bluestem Association for Student Education (B.A.S.E.).
